SO 9001: Significant Changes for Global Businesses
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has today announced a series of significant updates to its ISO 9001 standard, which sets the criteria for quality management systems.
Widely recognized worldwide for its role in ensuring excellence and consistency in the quality of a company’s products and services, ISO 9001 has undergone key modifications. These updates aim to help organizations adapt to an increasingly dynamic and digitally-focused business world.
The new standard, ISO 9001:2023, incorporates significant changes. One of the most notable is the adoption of a more holistic approach to quality management, now including factors such as cybersecurity and sustainability, aspects that have become increasingly important in the digital and climate change era.
Additionally, ISO 9001:2023 places a greater emphasis on risk and opportunity management, encouraging organizations to be more proactive in identifying and managing potential threats and opportunities, rather than simply reacting to problems as they arise.
ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica commented: “The ISO 9001 standard has always been an essential tool to help businesses improve their operations and ensure customer satisfaction. With the new updates, we hope that organizations worldwide can better face the challenges of the 21st century.”
ISO encourages all organizations currently certified under ISO 9001:2015 to start planning their transition to the 2023 version as soon as possible, to fully benefit from the improvements introduced in the standard. The deadline for the transition is the end of 2026.
